Kadir Can AkıncıCounterpoint Research’s most recent report reveals that in the second quarter of 2023, smartphone shipments in Europe witnessed a 12% year-over-year decline, marking the lowest quarterly shipment volume since Q1 2012. Western Europe experienced a 14% year-over-year decrease, while Eastern Europe observed a slightly milder decline at 8%. The downward trend in smartphone sales continues in every region of the world. The smartphone shipments face a decline for a long time and the reason for this might actually be the consumers seeking for devices with new features. Smartphone sales are in decline but the foldable sales increase.
According to the Counterpoint report, Europe is generally seeing a decrease in phone shipments, with Russia being the sole exception. Smartphone shipments in Russia appear to have increased by 4% year-over-year. Counterpoint says this is due to a big drop in smartphone sales because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.,
OPPO has faced ongoing challenges in Europe due to a protracted patent dispute, resulting in a substantial 51% year-over-year decline. realme, an OPPO subsidiary, experienced a significantly different outcome, recording a 12% annual increase. According to Counterpoint’s analysis, this boost in realme’s sales may be linked to the Russian market, where the exit of Apple and Samsung has positively impacted realme’s performance.
Honor, on the other hand, achieved a 9% growth in phone shipments. While some companies are experiencing growth, the overall sales trend continues to show a downward trajectory, suggesting that this decline will persist.
The decline in smartphone shipments appears to be ongoing, and there are no indications of the current downward trend coming to an end in the near future. In fact, smartphone shipments in 2023 may even fall below those of 2022.
