How to Reset and Remove AirPods from Apple ID

If you’re preparing to sell or pass down your AirPods or facing a technical issue, it’s essential to understand how to reset them correctly.

Resetting AirPods and AirPods Pro often resolve many common problems, but removing them from your Apple ID requires a different process.

AirPods are known for their quick pairing and simple connection with Apple devices. However, a reset fixes the issue if they stop charging or responding.

For those using AirPods 3rd generation, AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation), or AirPods Max, a specific security feature comes into play.

A simple reset won’t automatically remove the connection to your Apple ID. This feature aims to prevent stolen or lost AirPods from being reused, which can cause problems for anyone buying or selling used or refurbished AirPods.

Knowing how to reset and disconnect your AirPods from your Apple ID ensures you avoid any potential issues, making the process smoother for you and the following user.

How to Remove AirPods from Apple ID?

If you plan to sell or give your AirPods to someone else, follow these steps:

  • Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad.

  • Tap the Devices tab at the bottom, then select your AirPods.

  • Scroll down and choose Remove This Device.

If the original owner does this outside Bluetooth range, reset the AirPods before setting them up as new. Repeat the steps above.

Important Note:

Apple states this is the only way to remove a device from an Apple ID. Apple cannot remove the Pairing Lock for you.

If you purchased second-hand AirPods connected to someone else’s Apple ID and cannot contact the original owner, you will likely need to return the AirPods.

If you’re selling AirPods on platforms like eBay or similar services, reset them and remove them from Find My to avoid problems for the buyer. Leaving them linked to your Apple ID may cause issues.

When buying used AirPods, ask the seller to confirm they have reset and removed the device from their Find My account.

Ensuring the AirPods are disconnected allows the buyer to link them to their Apple ID without trouble. These steps help both buyers and sellers avoid any complications.
