TSMC’s 2nm based MediaTek chipset to tape out in September this year
In the 2025 Taipei International Computer Show, the CEO of MediaTek, Rick Tsai announced the company’s first 2nm node chipset. It uses the TSMC’s foundry. The chipset is expected to be taped out in September this year.
Tape out refers to the process of converting the designed integrated circuit (IC) layout of a chipset into an actual physical chip. There are multiple process involved in the design and development of the chipset and taping out is one of the early ones.
Though the official did not reveal much information about the upcoming chipset, it is expected that it will power-up the next-generation of Android flagship smartphones. In his keynote speech, “AI Unbounded, Intelligence Unlimited,” Cai Lixing looked back at MediaTek’s 28-year journey. He shared that over the last ten years, the company has shipped over 20 billion chips for devices like smartphones and other edge technology. Cai also mentioned that after moving to the 2nm process, MediaTek plans to use TSMC’s even more advanced A16 and A14 technologies in the future.
