The Snapdragon 8 Elite will be Qualcomm’s next flagship mobile chipset. It will also be the most powerful chipset in the world of Android. The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 will be its official competitor and it has been launched already. Previous rumours suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Elite will be very powerful in terms of performance. It will bring some hefty upgrade from its predecessor.
However, one thing which is a cause of concern among the powerful chipsets is its thermal management. Since these chipsets are powerful, they generate more heat and can sometimes even overheat. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 888 were the prime example of this. But the cause of overheating in 888 and 8 Gen 1 was more blamed on the Samsung nod than the performance itself.
Snapdragon 8 Elite is very powerful, but at what cost?
Until now, numerous rumours have confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite is going to be a very powerful chipset. Its prime core even manages the exceed the 4GHz clock speed. The raw power is going to be insane, but this is what causes the chipset to generate more heat and even affect the battery life of the device.
A recent finding suggests that the chipset draws over 20W of power on its usage. During normal use, the silicon reached the whopping temperature of 98.5 degrees Celcius (209.5 degrees Fahrenheit). The report also says that the heat generation is so insane that literally no amount of performance-throttling can lower the power consumption or help in cooling things.
What’s more concerning is that the report is based on the official version of the mobile chipset. However, the version used in the report is like 3 months old and 3 months is a pretty good time for any brand to fix the things. We can just hope that Qualcomm has addressed the issues and that we do not get to see any major overheating issues in the chipsets that will be commercially available on the devices.
The power consumption of the upcoming chipset could also be one of the reasons why the forthcoming flagships will make use of higher battery capacities. Since the chipset is powerful, it will surely draw more power from the source.
