Fairphone beta users’ data leaked accidentally

You might not have heard of this brand before, and that’s okay—it’s not as well-known as big names like Samsung or OnePlus. But in the world of sustainable smartphones, it’s actually quite popular. The company is working hard to grow and reach more markets. That said, there’s been a bit of a hiccup: according to a recent report, the company has accidentally leaked data from their beta users.

Misconfigured form on the Fairphone form resulted into data leak of multiple users

A report by PhoneArena claims that the data leak, which apparently stemmed from a misconfigured online form that was used by Fairphone for a beta testing survey. The survey, aside from the basic and intended questions, also requested for user’s details for obvious reason. However, the details of beta testers were later visible to others.

The data breach impacted 24 beta testers in total. Personal details like their names, home addresses, phone information, email addresses, telecom providers, and even IMEI numbers were exposed. The company notified the affected users about the breach through an official email. According to them, the leak happened on March 4th. They’ve since acknowledged the issue, fixed the misconfigured form, and ensured the user data is now secure.

To reassure its users, the company stated that “no external users had access to the leaked data.” They also confirmed that there’s no evidence of the data being misused or monitored by any individuals or groups.
