OmniVision officially launches its 1-inch camera sensor

OmniVision has launched a new camera sensor in the market, the OV50X. It’s a 50-megapixel resolution sensor with 1.6-micron (µm) pixel in a 1-inch optical format. The lens is specially designed for flagship smartphones that requires high dynamic range (HDR) capability in the videos. It is capable of capturing 18 stops of dynamic range.

The OV50X lens can shoot 8K videos at a whopping 180-frames per second. OmniVision promises that the new lens will offer best-in-class photos and videos performance regardless of the lighting condition. The camera lens supports 4-cell binning for 12.5-megapixel and is capable of performing 3-channel HDR at 60 frames per second.

OmnVision’s latest sensor comes with the Quad Phase Detection (QDP) autofocus technology that offers fast and reliable focusing in different lighting conditions, as per the brand. The sensor can also record ‘movie-grade’ videos with close to 110db of dynamic range. This is actually the highest range possible in the smartphone camera sensor. The mass production of the said lens will start in Q3 of 2025.
