Does OPPO only makes smartphones?

OPPO is a well-established and high-quality brand established in China, now known for its smartphones, which have been coming up with various products for more than 20 years. Although registered in 2001 in China, it emerged in China in 2004 by Tony Chen. This company, which is under the roof of BBK Electronic, one of China’s well-established companies, was initially a company that produced media players. Later, in addition to several technological innovations, it also produced products such as smartphones, smart televisions, smart watches, headphones, and audio systems.

OPPO’s Media Player Adventure

Although OPPO was founded in 2004, its first product was an MP3 player in 2005. Called OPPO X3, this MP3 player attracted attention with its hand-sized size and design reminiscent of a water drop.

In 2006, this time OPPO improved itself and produced an MP4 player. Called OPPO MP4-A3, this MP4 Player is a very successful product for its time as well as its small size. It has a 4.3-inch LCD screen. Supporting formats such as MPEG-4/DIVX/XVID/WMV9/MPEG-1, this MP4 player can also play audio files such as MP3/WMA. It has physical buttons such as pause/play, forward/rewind, and 1GB memory card support. This player with stereo speakers could play video continuously for 8 hours and audio for 10 hours.

In 2007 and 2008, the company introduced the DV-980H and DV-983H DVD players. These DVD players were able to upscale the image on the DVD to 1080p. In 2009, it introduced the BDP-83, a “universal” Blu-ray player that supports all formats. The fact that it is a “universal” Blu-ray player that can play DVD and CD format discs as well as Blu-ray makes this product special. In late 2016, it launched the BDP-103, a 4K Blu-Ray player. In 2018, it decided not to produce these products.

OPPO’s fast-charging technologies

Realizing that the charging speed increases as the batteries in smartphones get bigger and that users are not very satisfied, OPPO has developed fast charging technology. VOOC’s fast charging technology, which we all know, entered our lives in 2014. This fast charging technology offered the opportunity to fill the battery of phones with 5V/4A. In the same year, OPPO introduced the OPPO Find 7, the first phone with VOOC fast charging technology.

In 2015, it announced VOOC 2.0 fast charging technology. VOOC 2.0 is a more advanced fast-charging technology with the same features as VOOC. In 2016, SuperVOOC technology emerged this time. With this technology, which provides battery charging with 10V/5A (50W), a 3400mAh battery can be fully charged in less than 40 minutes. In 2019, VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology was introduced to users. This technology, which charges the battery with 5V/6A (30W), could fill a 4000mAh battery in 50 minutes. In the same year, VOOC 4.0 came out and was an advanced version of VOOC 3.0.

In 2020, SuperVOOC 2.0 was introduced. This technology, which allows smartphones to charge their batteries with 10V/6.5A (65W), increased to 20V/12A (240W) in 2022. This technology, which appeared at MWC 2022, is used by realme GT Neo 5. This technology, which can fill the 4,500mAh battery in 9 minutes, can show us that it can come to much better places in terms of fast charging technology. In 2023, it announced the SuperVOOC S power management chip that can control charging and discharging states. This technology was first used in the OnePlus 11R, which OnePlus released earlier this year. Thanks to this chip, the phone’s charge allows the phone to be safely charged up to 50 percent and up to 10 minutes.

OPPO’s 5G technologies

OPPO first entered the 5G field in 2015, when it established a communication standards team to support 5G R&D. In 2018, it realized the world’s first 5G mobile WeChat multi-person video call, which lasted more than 17 minutes in a 5G environment. Also this year, OPPO, together with Nokia, decided to use joint 5G patents. They would jointly use the patents of the developed 5G technologies until 2021.

In April 2019, OPPO officially launched its first 5G  smartphone, OPPO Reno 5G, in European markets in Zurich, Switzerland; the phone officially went on sale in May and became the first 5G supported smartphone to be sold in Europe. In 2021, OPPO led the commercialization of Europe’s first 5G standalone network with Vodafone, Qualcomm, and Ericsson. In the same year, in 2018, the agreement to use joint 5G patents with Nokia ended. The two companies will no longer be able to use each other’s technologies.

In 2022, Nokia filed a lawsuit in 4 different countries against OPPO, which continued to use the patents even though the agreement to use joint 5G patents made with Nokia in 2018 expired. OPPO, in turn, sued in 9 different countries. So far 1 case has been decided. In the lawsuit filed by Nokia, the German government found Nokia right. OPPO, using an invalid license, will no longer be able to sell in Germany.

OPPO’s contribution to the camera industry

OPPO made its first breakthrough in camera with the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom smartphone. This model offers lossless 5X optical zoom support as well as 10X hybrid zoom support, which has greatly pioneered the camera industry. Ultra video stabilization 3.0 is a video stabilization technology that makes the video shooting experience flawless. This technology was also introduced with OPPO Reno 10X Zoom. Apart from the main camera, this technology, which supports the wide-angle camera and front camera, aims to shoot flicker-free, grain-free videos. The OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 Pro also introduced the ultra night mode 3.0 feature. This technology, which aims to turn dark scenes perfectly into light, has taken an important step in night photography.

At the same time, with the OPPO Reno 5 series, the concept of Artificial intelligence video entered our lives. By getting support from artificial intelligence while shooting videos, we could apply live HDR while shooting videos in better color tones. At the same time, there were options such as showing only red color or only green color in the video, as well as showing only human color. In late 2020, the camera system Full-path Color Management System was announced, which allows you to take photos with support for 1.07 billion colors. This technology was also first used in the OPPO Find X3 Pro.

At the 2021 OPPO Future Imaging Technology event, OPPO unveiled a range of new technologies, including RGBW sensor, 85-200mm continuous optical zoom, Five-axis OIS, and under-display camera technologies. The RGBW sensor is a sensor structure that adds a white layer compared to a traditional RGB sensor. With this structure, 60% more light is received, and 35% noise reduction is achieved compared to conventional sensors. The 85-200mm continuous optical zoom allows for smoother zooming. Five-axis OIS is a technology developed for superior video stabilization.

In 2022, OPPO started collaborating with Hasselblad. It also developed its chip, the Marisilicon X Imaging NPU, to improve the camera experience. The chip, which goes through the 6nm manufacturing process, will be used specifically to record 4K AI Night Video. It started to use this in the OPPO Find X5 series, which was released in 2022. In 2023, sometime after the OPPO Find X6 Pro came out, OPPO decided that it could no longer produce its own Marisilicon X Imaging NPU and decided to close its chip development unit Zeku.
