At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 event, Google’s President of Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, confirmed that Google is on track to meet its deadline for releasing the new Android version. He said, “So far, so good. I’ve never had a release where, at this stage, the bug count was exactly where I wanted it to be. But the team is working really hard, and we’re excited about getting it there.”

Google is reportedly planning to release the new version of Android earlier this year reportedly due to the development changes within the core Android team. For the next big Android update, the company has switched to the Trunk Stable development.

Samat explains that “Trunk Stable development means all Android developers are working on the same branch of code.” By adopting this approach, Google can create the entire system faster and more efficiently. He adds that the team is putting in a lot of effort to release the Android 16 as quickly as possible by fixing all the bugs and resolving any issues.
