Pinned conversations sit at the top of your main message list, displayed as large contact circles. You can pin up to nine threads, including one-on-one chats and group conversations.
These threads can contain SMS messages (green bubbles) and iMessages (blue bubbles).
You’ll see the other person’s profile picture as the contact icon for one-on-one chats. In group chats, profile pictures from all participants appear in a larger circle unless a specific group image has been set.
There are three ways to pin conversations in messages, which are detailed below.
How can I pin a conversation in Messages?
Method 1:
- Open the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Find the conversation you want to pin and long press on it.
- Tap Pin [name] from the menu.
Method 2:

Once pinned, the conversation will no longer appear in the regular message list below.
If the contact doesn’t have a profile picture, their contact circle will show the first letter of their name on a grey background.
You will also see a typing ellipsis (three dots) on the contact circle when the person is typing, along with a message preview in the form of a chat bubble.
How can I unpin conversations in Messages?
To unpin a conversation, long press on the large contact icon at the top and select Unpin [name] from the menu.
Alternatively, you can tap Edit in the top-left corner, then tap the gray minus icon next to the conversation you want to unpin.
How can I hide alerts for pinned conversations?
