OnePlus 12 detailed camera review

OnePlus 12 has finally been introduced, boasting quite impressive features. While its predecessor, OnePlus 11 offered trimmed-down features in many aspects, we can confidently say that OnePlus is back again with a true flagship device, OnePlus 12. The device comes with pretty solid triple camera setup and is a performance beast with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and the base variant of OnePlus 12 comes with whopping 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, which can be expanded to 24GB RAM and 1TB storage.

OnePlus 12 comes with a triple camera setup, including a 23mm wide-angle camera, a 70mm telephoto camera, and a 14mm ultrawide-angle camera. The device boasts a powerful camera setup, with the main camera featuring an impressive f/1.6 aperture lens and the telephoto camera offering 3x zoom with a 1/2.0-inch image sensor.

For making a comparison, Xiaomi 14 Pro‘s telephoto camera has a smaller image sensor size of 1/2.76-inch. OnePlus made this comparison during the unveiling event of OnePlus 12, Xiaomi is just another Android smartphone manufacturer with powerful camera setup as Xiaomi has recently achieved notable success in the camera department through its collaboration with Leica. OnePlus seems to be ambitious announcing they did a better job compared to Leica and Xiaomi, OnePlus 12’s telephoto camera is 1.53 times bigger than Xiaomi 14 Pro’s.

In addition, OnePlus 12’s ultrawide-angle camera features automatic focus, a feature lacking in some budget devices or non-camera-oriented devices. The focus enables the capture of macro shots with the ultrawide-angle camera.

One of the most intriguing features of OnePlus 12 is its telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom capability and a focal length of 70mm. Despite its ability to perform relatively modest 3x zoom, OnePlus opted for a periscope telephoto lens. The periscope telephoto camera of OnePlus 12 comes with an f/2.6 aperture lens and a 64MP 1/2.0-inch OV64B image sensor.

If you pay attention to the photos shared by OnePlus, even in photos with a 2x digital crop, the background still has natural depth blur. Thanks to the 3x optical zoom and large image sensor, when capturing the photo of distant objects, you can clearly see the natural bokeh effect.

You can take a look at photos taken with 70mm and 140mm (6x digital zoom over 3x optical) in the above photos. OnePlus 12’s telephoto camera produces excellent results even in low light conditions.

The main camera of OnePlus 12 comes with the Sony LYT 808 sensor, f/1.6 lens, and a sensor size of 1/1.4-inch. Sony’s new CMOS image sensor comes with a double-stacked layer, enabling separate layers for the transistor and photodiode, resulting in much clearer images. While OnePlus does not have a 1-inch image sensor, this double-stacked technology still gives superior results.

The ultrawide-angle camera of OnePlus 12 features a 50MP Sony IMX 581 image sensor. This camera has a focal length of 14mm, a 114˚ field of view, and a sensor size of 1/2.0-inch. OnePlus has chosen to use a 1/2.0-inch size for both the telephoto and ultrawide-angle cameras. Although OnePlus 12 does not have a dedicated macro camera, it still produces impressive results. The official images shared by OnePlus are quite impressive.

If you enjoy spending time with the camera on your phone, OnePlus 12 is definitely one of the devices you should consider buying. It performs well in low light conditions with its main camera and boasts a powerful telephoto camera. So, what are your thoughts on the camera system of OnePlus 12?
