Xiaomi’s Last-Minute Switch: 15 Pro Gets a Periscope Sensor Upgrade

The whole internet is buzzing because of the upcoming Xiaomi 15 series. There have been a lot of rumours and leaks regarding the Xiaomi 15 and 15 Pro devices for a long time. The Pro model was expected to get a 3X periscope lens. But it seems that Xiaomi decided to make an end-moment change with it. It is now getting an upgraded periscope lens.

Xiaomi 15 Pro to get a new periscope telephoto lens

Known tipster Digital Chat Station on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo has posted information about the upcoming Xiaomi 15 Pro. The post reads “The periscope of the latest large cup engineering machine has been changed, IMX8 5X optical zoom periscope telephoto, supporting the latest AI large model super-resolution alogirthm.” (translated)

The device he is referring to is none other than the Xiaomi 15 Pro. Per the tipster, Xiaomi is switching to a periscope telephoto lens with an IMX8 sensor. The periscope will support optical zoom of up to 5X. The same has been spotted on the engineering prototype of Xiaomi 15 Pro. The device is also said to support AI super-resolution algorithm.

This is something new. The Xiaomi 14 Pro, for reference, did not have any periscope telephoto lens. Instead, it had a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 telephoto lens with 3.2X optical zoom support. Some early reports also claimed that 15 Pro will have an Omni vision OV50K primary camera with a 50-megapixel resolution.

Regarding other specifications, Xiaomi 15 Pro offers a 6.73-inch micro-curved OLED display with 2K pixel resolution and support of up to 120Hz high refresh rate. Further, the device will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen-4 chipset. It will draw power from a 5400mAh battery that will support up to 120W fast wired charging support.
